…Through A Mother’s Eyes…

“It was a difficult choice to place our first-born son in a residential home.   However, due to the hard reality of adolescent anger, coupled with the complication of autistic and bi-polar behaviors, we saw no other options.  Family dynamics were also a major concern.  We had two other children’s futures and emotional states to consider.  Our first step toward this process was to apply to the Regional Center with the hope of receiving support and relief from our traumatic lifestyle.

In the summer of 2001, we applied to the Regional Center.  We were desperate for some ray of hope.  We knew our son’s behaviors were due largely to his disorders--which were difficult to diagnose--yet because of that, the Regional Center also had difficulty taking him in.  It was unclear on what basis he should qualify.  After many weeks of discussions, appointments, tears and prayer, the Regional Center agreed to accept him.  In early fall of 2001, he was placed in his first group home.  I would like to say that this was the change he needed, but unfortunately it wasn’t.  Coordinating the appropriate home environment for my son with a day or work program that suits his needs has been extremely difficult.  Very few people seem to have the patience, know-how, and willingness to work with such complicated behaviors and mannerisms such as are exhibited by our son.  This has been “heart-wrenching” for us, and we kept hoping for miracles.  After five different homes in five years, we were again faced with a needed change in his residence.

In October of 2006, we obtained conservatorship, and our family moved closer to be able to advocate for his needs.  Amazingly, within a month, we were able to find a residential home which was located just one mile from our house.  This home seemed to be the “perfect” fit for our son, and to this day, we have found it to be true!  Tom has now lived in the Grelling Residential Home for one year and three months.   His needs are still great, but we have found the patient environment and knowledgeable, willing staff that our son has so desperately needed.

In addition, the Grelling Home is the only home we have found where the owners/administrators have had a totally “hands-on” relationship with the clients and staff.  Their expertise provides counseling, not only for the clients and staff, but for us as parents, as well.  For the first time, we feel that our son is in the right environment, and is actually making good progress.   I believe we have found our “miracle!”

“I can’t say enough about the loving care provided at Grelling Residential Home by Russ and Ann Grelling and their wonderful staff.  They took my beautiful daughter, who has struggled with epilepsy all her adult life, into their home when she was having a very difficult time, and they turned her situation completely around.

The Grellings went way beyond their means and what would be expected to make sure my daughter received everything she needed—medical attention, special diets, fun events, home school to help her finish her high school diploma, and an appropriate day program that matched her artistic talents.  Russ and Ann didn’t just do this for my daughter, they do this for every resident in their home.

The thing I really appreciated the most was that the Grellings understood  that I loved my daughter and needed to be kept aware of what was going on in her activities and her life.   My daughter made so many improvements in her life situation that she was able to move into a more independent setting.

Even after my daughter has left the Grellings’ residential home, they keep in touch with me and with her.  I can call Russ and talk about my daughter any time I need advice or just need someone to listen to my concerns.

I highly recommend Grelling Residential Home to any parent who is concerned about leaving their son or daughter in a residential home.  If you are looking for a safe, a truly caring home, you need to talk to Russ and Ann Grelling.  You can trust them.”
